hear coin

AudiblePerhaps it’s unsurprising that audiobooks take much less time to produce than print books, but still… Less than two months from signing the contract, you can now purchase and download my first YA novel, Fair Coin, in audiobook form in the U.S. and in the U.K. I expect it won’t take long for Quantum Coin to follow.

I’m so excited to have the book out in a different format, with other people adapting the text for a different audience. I’ve only heard the sample of the opening pages so far, but narrator MacLeod Andrews is amazing and his performance is absolutely perfect. It’s both odd and thrilling to hear someone else speaking words that have largely existed only in my head and my voice for so long, and it’s great to hear what MacLeod has done with the book.

To celebrate unlocking the audiobook achievement, here’s some related trivia:

  • Audible_FCThe U.K. audiobook is the first official release of Fair Coin in any foreign market!
  • MacLeod Andrews also provided the voice of one of the Will Graysons in the audiobook of a favorite YA book of mine, Will Grayson, Will Grayson by David Levithan and John Green.
  • One of MacLeod’s recent YA audiobook releases was the excellent Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, who I share an agent with. Some of MacLeod’s other notable (to me) projects for Brilliance Audio and Audible include Jumper by Steven Gould, Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness, and Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown (one of my fellow Apocalypsies).
  • My mom never read to me when I was a kid (don’t feel too sorry for me, I had a pretty good handle on it on my own), but I really enjoy hearing someone tell me a story. I think it reminds me of the first grade and Reading Rainbow. So maybe that’s why I like going to readings and listening to audiobooks and podcasts!
  • Now when someone asks me how long Fair Coin is, I can tell them it’s about 9 hours and 40 minutes. The unabridged audiobook is roughly as long as the Lord of the Rings film trilogy!

So if you’ve been waiting for the audiobook, wait no longer! I hope lots of people who haven’t yet read Fair Coin give it a try.

alternate wednesday: mr. nobody

AltWed_Logo

Anyone who has read my books or my blog knows that I have a fascination with doppelgängers (doubles and lookalikes). Lately, I’ve been receiving some messages from friends and fans who wanted to let me know that Fair Coin now has its very own doppelgänger! What do you think?

doppelgangers

I wonder if the people who designed the poster for the U.S. theatrical release of Mr. Nobody were perhaps influenced by the excellent book cover illustrated by Sam Weber. Oddly enough, back when Sam was brainstorming ideas for Fair Coin, I remember him noting that he wanted to go for a movie poster aesthetic. Well done!

Unsurprisingly, Mr. Nobody sounds like an amazing film — exactly the sort of thing I will like. Apparently it premiered in 2009 at some international festivals and has already been released (with different posters) with a cult following. It’s only now just hitting the U.S. Here’s the synopsis from the film’s Facebook page:

nobodycoinA young boy stands on a station platform. The train is about to leave. Should he go with his mother or stay with his father? An infinity of possibilities rise from this decision. As long as he doesn’t choose, anything is possible.

Yeah, sign me up for that! Mr. Nobody will be released for iTunes and on demand next week and theatrically in November; now that it’s on my radar, I am definitely going to see it sooner than later. Hopefully it will do a doppelgängbusters box office, so one day there will really be a Fair Coin movie poster in our universe! :)

hey! listen!

Audible

Good news, everyone! We’ve just sold the audio book rights to Fair Coin and Quantum Coin to Audible! Special thanks to my fab agents at JABberwocky who made this possible, Eddie Schneider and Lisa Rodgers.

I’m thrilled because I basically want anyone who might be interested in my books to be able to enjoy them in whatever format they like, and I know lots of people prefer audio books over paper. I also love being read to, and I’m excited to see another interpretation of the stories I wrote. But this deal is especially nice because the duology will finally be available in the UK!

I don’t have any details yet on who will be narrating the books or when they’ll be available, because this pretty much just happened. I doubt I’ll have any input on who the reader will be, but hey, I’d get a kick out of it if Tom Welling or Dean Cain read them.

Who do you think would be the best reader for the audio book versions of Fair Coin and Quantum Coin? And what’s your favorite audio book?

I’m particularly psyched and a little bit terrified about the Book Club discussion of Fair Coin on Saturday. As for my reading later that day, I’m not sure what I will share, but it may be my most recent short story, “The Grimoire Girls,” which is forthcoming in the anthology Schoolbooks and Sorcery, edited by Michael M. Jones.

Also, although I will not have a dedicated time slot for signings, I’m happy to sign my books whenever. If you still need to pick up a copy of Fair Coin or Quantum Coin, I believe The Missing Volume will have them for sale at their booth; I’ll post updates on Twitter, which is probably the best way to stalk me while I’m at the convention.

(On a dorky side note, I’m getting a kick out of being listed alphabetically near Eve Myles in the Dragon Con program book and on the website. I hope I’ll get to meet her!)

catching up

Wow, I haven’t blogged here for more than a month.  Sorry about that. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to blog–a lot has been going on, and I have things to talk about (like Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel, not to mention some recent controversies on the internet…). However, one of my struggles as a writer has been learning not to take on too much. I have a day job and a family and some semblance of a social life, and several other commitments on the side, like writing Star Trek reviews at The Viewscreen, and editing newsletters and magazines, and so on. I have to fit writing fiction in there somewhere, and for the last month or so, I made the decision to focus on that. The good news is, I just finished a major revision on a novel, so I consider my time away well spent. But now I have a ton of e-mails to catch up on and a backlog of things to blog about…

Since it’s been an egregiously long time since I blogged here, here’s a quick update on some very important and mostly wonderful things:

  • Last month, Fair Coin received the 2012 Andre Norton Award for Outstanding Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy Book! I was completely stunned and honored, particularly since every one of the nominated books could just as easily have received it. It was an incredible experience just to be in San Jose, CA for the Nebula Award Weekend, which is where the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) organization gives out their awards, let alone take home the shiny award. (For photos from the weekend, visit Richard Man Photo, and click here for a list of all the Nebula award recipients and nominees.)
  • I am a finalist for the 2013 British Fantasy Award for Best Newcomer (aka the Sydney J. Bounds Award), for Fair Coin. Wow. Nominees were voted on by members of the British Fantasy Society and winners will be selected by a jury and announced at the World Fantasy Convention in November. I’m particularly surprised and pleased to get this recognition because my books have not yet been published in the UK!
  • Last month I visited my old high school in Yonkers, NY for career day. (Fun fact: Fair Coin is set in the fictional city of Summerside, which is basically Yonkers.) Many of the vendors there were in the medical profession, and I thought it might be weird for me as a former pre-med student there to be hanging out as a writer. But it was amazing to be back there and meet so many students and faculty who are excited about books and writing, and it was wonderful to reconnect with an old teacher of mine, Dr. Clarice Morris. Shout outs to some of the great teachers and teens I talked to: Joshua, Samantha, Melanie (pictured with me), Charisma, Shyana, Marco, Dean, and Josue. And thanks to Jim Riley, the school’s media specialist, who brought me there.
  • Oh yeah, I just turned 35. Not bad.

Finally, here are some recent, noteworthy reviews and interviews:

I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but that’s all I’ve got for now. Hopefully blogging will pick up a little more here now that I am not stuck in the revision cave!
