Welcome to the Winter 2012 YA Scavenger Hunt! This tri-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way for readers to get exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors… and a chance to win some awesome prizes! In this hunt, you not only have access to exclusive content from each author, you also get clues at each stop for the scavenger hunt. SCAVENGER HUNT PUZZLE

Directions: Look for my favorite number “hidden” somewhere below in red. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the red team, and then add them up. This number is your secret code to win the grand prize!
Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.
Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by December 2, 2012, at noon Pacific Time. Today, I am pleased to be hosting Nancy Holder on my website for the YA Scavenger Hunt! I’m thrilled because Nancy has written novels and episode guides for some of my favorite series, like Smallville and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Here’s more about her and her work, in her own words:

Isn’t this YA Scavenger Hunt the best way to kick off the winter holidays? The fabulous E.C. Myers  is hosting me!

I’m the New York Times bestselling author of the Wicked Saga, co-written with Debbie Viguie. Debbie and I have written three young adult dark fantasy series together. I also write novels and episode guidebooks based on different TV shows and “universes,” including Teen Wolf, Angel, Hellboy, Hulk, Smallville, and my new book, Buffy: The Making of a Slayer. I also write and edit comic books and graphic novels, and I teach at the University of Southern Maine (even though I live in San Diego.) I also write urban fantasy for the GothicScapes imprint. BUFFY: THE MAKING OF A SLAYER Book Description:  Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, this lavishly produced book is the first authorized, fully illustrated retrospective of the hit show. Offering in-depth commentary on the making of the series, the book explores the characters and mythology of the Buffy universe and follows the evolution of all seven seasons. Die-hard Whedon fans will also find insider information on his involvement in other projects, including Angel, Firefly, and more. Housed in a foil-stamped slipcase, this volume features more than 120 images, including rare behind-the-scenes photos, sketches, props, and memorabilia from the Twentieth Century Fox archives, along with stills from the most pivotal on-screen moments. I’ve been doing a lot of writing about werewolves. First up, I just completed work on Buffy: The Making of a Slayer, which will be available on December 11th. On Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Oz, a werewolf, was played by Seth Green. Seth is one of the co-creators of Robot Chicken, and he’s been in zillions of movies. Oz is doing okay in the human world as a werewolf until he meets Veruca, a female werewolf who urges him not only to cheat on his girlfriend, but then Veruca tries to kill her.

Second, I wrote On Fire, a novel set in universe of the Teen Wolf show on MTV. Teen Wolf has been on for two seasons and has been renewed for a third. I love it so much—it completely sucks you in. Everyone on the show has secrets to keep and people to protect. I’m hosting a #TEENWOLFREWATCH on Monday nights at 10 PM EST and you’re welcome to join us. We all cue up the show and watch together. Third, Debbie Viguié and I are working on the Wolf Springs Chronicles. Unleashed was the first book in the trilogy, and Hot Blooded will be available in December 2012. In this series, we created our own werewolf mythology, which is slightly different from our werewolf lore in the Wicked Saga. Katelyn, our protagonist, has met a werewolf who claims to have been turned into a werewolf through magic, not a bite. Katelyn wonders what the difference is—turning into a wolf seems pretty magical to her (though not always in a good way!)

When I think “Hunt,” I think two things: Bambi, and werewolves! I’ve written a poem to celebrate my favorite shapeshifter:

 

Winter Wolf

The snow is hushed; the dark night’s cry
cloaks his wings as my angel flies by.The wolf is cursed; the gleam in his eye
Speaks of his desire for one such as I.

The luminous moon my angel enthralls
The numinous world to my guardian calls.The wound is deep
The change is hard.
Protector and guide, you let down your guard.I am changed and my heart has bled
For the life and home that I have fled.But in the snow, as the pack gives chase,

    I would love to go to Spain in the year 1469 and be able to attend Isabel and Ferdinand’s wedding. That story is so intriguing and I’d love to be a part of it!

    I would visit New York in the 1920s! I want to be part of the Prohibition era, wear a flapper dress and literally enjoy what seems to be a very glamorous ambiance.

    I think I would like to travel back to Ancient Egypt. I have been obsessed with Egypt ever since I was a kid. I have been lucky enough to go visit, but I would have loved to see it in its prime!

    That is a tough question! As a huge history buff I could easily think of a few dozen times/places I would love to visit. While thinking about it I happened to glance up a few comments to Tara’s post about her pawpaw. I immediately knew when I would return to. I would go back to earlier this year to try to save the life of someone very missed. More than that is tmi and personal.

    I would love to go to France in 1800, right after the French Revolution! I love the Revolution era, but I don’t think I’d want to be smack dab in the middle of it.

    I would probably go back to 2001 (at least indoor plumbing is available) and try to notify and stop the terrorist attacks. I would try to save thousands of lives (civilians and our army/marine/airforce/etc fighters)

    If I could travel back in time I would want to visit sometime in the early 1900s. A new century and a time when chivalry wasn’t dead and the beginnings of technology were being dreamed up and created.
