Introducing ReMade!

I am really excited about my newest project: ReMade, a young adult science fiction serial premiering today at www.serialbox.com.

I say “premiering” because Serial Box stories are modeled after television development practices, and the company considers itself to be the “HBO for readers.” Before I started writing short stories and novels, I wanted to write for TV and films, so this is kind of the best of both worlds. The writing team meets in person to discuss the entire series, plan the arc for the current season, and break and assign stories. We use TV terms like “pilot” — which you can download now for free! — and every 13,000-word story is called an episode, written to be consumed in about 40 minutes. (You can also listen to the audio version if you prefer.)

This has been an incredible collaborative experience where I feel like I’ve leveled up as a writer, because I’m learning from people at the top of their craft and pushing myself to write better so I don’t embarrass myself.

New episodes are available every Wednesday, beginning today, and you can purchase them individually for $1.99 or subscribe or buy a season pass (just like on iTunes!) to get them even cheaper. If you have an iPhone, you can read them in the Serial Box app, or transfer them to the eReader or platform of your choice because they’re DRM-free.

I’ve written three of the 15 episodes in the first season, and you can refer to the schedule below if you’d like to see when those will be available. But I hope you’ll check out the whole series, because in my humble opinion it’s excellent and we’ve all contributed to this story and these characters.

Author Signings This Weekend!

Just wanted to let anyone living in Central Pennsylvania know I will be reading and signing my books THE SILENCE OF SIX and AGAINST ALL SILENCE tomorrow, Saturday 9/10 at 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Barnes & Noble! Hope to see some of you there!

I’ll also be making an appearance at the Lansdowne Arts on the Avenue Festival on Sunday, Sept. 11, signing my books at 4 p.m. You likely won’t be able to purchase them at the festival, so please bring your copies from home and I’ll happily deface them with my Sharpie!

Foreign Currency

One of the most incredible things about being an author is having my book published outside of the United States. A few years ago we sold the rights to my first novel, Fair Coin, to Sharp Point Press, a Taiwanese publisher. I recently saw their stunning cover for the book, which I am thrilled to share with you:

I am such a big fan of this! The book will be coming out in Taiwan in the fall, I think as early as next month. And Sharp Point has something really special in mind: They are selling books with replicas of the quantum coin Ephraim finds, which resemble a U.S. quarter from another universe in which Puerto Rico is the 51st state! Wow. I’ve seen a mock-up of the coin, and I am so excited and impressed. I hope I get one of those, and I’ll share pics of the finished book and coin when I can.

For comparison, below is the U.S. cover of Fair Coin, illustrated by Sam Weber, and because I’m not sure if I’ve shared it here before, the equally amazing Russian cover, by Darya Kuznetsova.

This has been a good book week for me. :)

Which cover do you like best?

Against All Silence Is Out Today!

Today my fourth novel, Against All Silence, is out from Adaptive Books!

This was perhaps the hardest book I’ve written yet. See, the previous book, The Silence of Six, was published shortly after my first child was born, so this is the first novel I wrote entirely while trying to keep a little person alive and happy. I was a stay-at-home dad while writing the early drafts of this book, which as you can imagine was quite challenging. Then I had a full-time job, and I was still the primary caregiver for my kid (and a new puppy), which has been even more demanding.

Beyond all that, I also wanted to make this book even better than the first one, both familiar to fans and different enough to make it fresh. Did I succeed? You tell me…

There has been a little confusion about when Against All Silence is actually coming out, due to a new partnership between my publisher and Barnes & Noble. Basically, you can buy the book exclusively at Barnes & Noble stores everywhere and online at BN.com beginning today, but if you want to pick it up elsewhere, such as at Amazon.com or your local indie bookseller, you will have to wait until Feb. 17, 2017. You can read more about this unique deal at the NY Times. Similarly, B&N currently is the only place to get the paperback edition of The Silence of Six with its creepy new cover.

Some other goodies: You can still read two short stories in the SOS series for free at Wattpad right now! The first, “SOS”, is a prequel to The Silence of Six, and the second is a novella titled “DoubleThink” that bridges that book and Against All Silence.

Regardless of how and where you get Against All Silence, thank you for reading!

Brookville-Bound!

If you live near Brookville, PA, please come to the Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library on Thursday, August 11 at 7 p.m.! They were kind enough to invite me to speak about my books and writing and my adventures catching and training Pokémon… Well, my books and writing, and we’ll see how the evening goes. The event is FREE, so you have nothing but an hour or two to lose, and you can always DVR the Olympics and watch them later, so. See you there?

Oh, also I’ll be signing and giving away advance copies of my new book, Against All Silence (out on Aug. 23 from Adaptive Books, at a Barnes & Noble near you), and limited edition copies of the short story prequel to The Silence of Six, “SOS”. So the event is free, and you can get free, rare books! SEE YOU THERE.
