upcoming events

I have a couple of appearances lined up this month:

First, if you’re anywhere near Rosemont, PA, come to the Rosemont Book Festival this Saturday, May 4. The first annual book festival at Rosemont College will be held at Connelly Green and in the library with workshops, readings, panels, and signings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I will be on a panel about young adult books with fabulous authors Beth Kephart, April Lindner, and Tiffany Schmidt from 11-12, with a signing afterward. Books will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of Children’s Book World. Hope to see you there!

Rare (First!) West Coast Signing
I will be attending the 48th Nebula Awards Weekend later this month, which includes a mass autograph session on Friday, May 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the San Jose Hilton, 300 Almaden Blvd, San Jose, CA.

The autograph session is open to the public and Borderland Books will be selling books by the authors in attendance. This will be my first signing on the West Coast!

andre norton award nom!

Am I the only one who likes the shortened form of “nomination” because it reminds me of food? Nom nom nom.

Anyway.

I’ve been sitting on this news for a while, but now that it’s public and I can talk about it, it’s finally sinking in, and I’m even more excited: Fair Coin was nominated for the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy!

Deep breaths.

nebulaawardlogoJust like the Nebula Awards, the Norton Award is voted on by members of SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. It is more than an honor to have my first novel recognized by writers — it’s freaking awesome is what it is. I have wanted to be a member of SFWA since I started writing, and Fair Coin is the fiction sale that finally made me eligible. And ever since I found out that there was an award for middle grade and young adult SFF (which by the way, is a great thing and very progressive, are you paying attention, Hugo Award committee?), I’ve wondered what it might be like to be nominated for it. Now I know! Freaking awesome.

I’ll admit though, I didn’t really think it would happen this year. As you know, Bob, I was on the committee that added three titles to this somewhat longish shortlist of nominees, and of course, mine couldn’t be one of them. And so many wonderful books for children and teens were published in 2012, which is good for everyone who loves fiction… even the author hoping someone will notice his little novel. After all, I’m not just a writer, I’m a reader, and I’m thrilled that so many of my favorite books made it onto the ballot this year:

If you’ve read even a few of those novels already, you’ll know how amazing it is for me to see Fair Coin listed anywhere near them. If you haven’t read some of these yet, don’t just take my word that they’re great—a lot of other writers think so too. I love reading and writing YA so much, and this ballot is a solid representation of the best that the genre can offer both kids and adults. *blushes*

I’m bouncing around a bit about all the other nominees for the Nebula Awards, many of whom are personal friends and/or writers I admire and also just swell people. (Don’t worry, I’m not gonna name-drop.) Congratulations to everyone, especially my fellow Norton nominees. I, for one, am going to go practice my knot-tying skills and archery to prepare for the arena. There are twelve of us, after all.

Meanwhile, even though I’ve read all the novels on the Norton ballot already (did I mention how great they are?), I still have a lot of reading to catch up on.

for your consideration

I don’t like doing the “hard sell,” and I don’t like awards season. But I would also feel remiss if I didn’t mention my award-eligible works, because hey, I’m proud of them, and this is the first time I have an actual novel as a contender.

So I humbly submit my first novel, FAIR COIN (Pyr, 2012), for your 2012 awards consideration. There is plenty of information about it right here on this site, with links to most of the reviews the book has received, including this outstanding one from io9.

jury duty

I’m happy to report that I have once again volunteered for SFWA’s Andre Norton Award committee. I’m honored to have been selected to participate with such a distinguished group of people, and I’m looking forward to reading a lot of great middle grade and young adult books this year and agonizing over what to recommend. Official announcement follows.

The 2012 Andre Norton Award committee has been chosen, and will begin accepting books for consideration. Any young adult prose or graphic novel first published in English in 2012 is eligible.

The judges are:

Carrie Vaughn

The committee will consider all submitted young adult books until January 31st, 2013. The award will be presented at the 48th Annual Nebula Awards Weekend in San Jose, California, on May 18.

The Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, named to honor prolific science fiction and fantasy author Andre Norton (1912–2005), is a yearly juried award presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) to the author of an outstanding young adult science fiction or fantasy book published in the previous year. The award was established in 2005 by then SFWA president Catherine Asaro and the first SFWA Young Adult Fiction committee and announced on February 20, 2005. The first Norton Award (for the year 2006) was bestowed during the Nebula Awards ceremonies on May 11–13, 2007.

looking for a few good books

I’m serving on the 2011 jury for SFWA’s Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, which is able to add up to three books to the award ballot, to ensure a broad selection of the best in the genre. We are actively reading eligible works published in 2011, and welcome authors and publishers to recommend or submit (in print or electronic formats) noteworthy YA books. Nominations from SFWA membership and the Norton Jury will be announced in February and the award will be presented at the Nebula Awards on May 19, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia.

The Jury is keenly interested in reviewing works that may not have received a lot of attention, books from small presses, graphic novels, and books that were not published as YA (such as middle grade) but could have been.

The Andre Norton Award for an outstanding young adult science fiction or fantasy book was established in 2006 by Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America. The award is named in honor of the late Andre Norton, a SFWA Grand Master and author of more than 100 novels, many of them for young adult readers. Norton’s work has influenced generations of young people, creating new fans of the fantasy and science fiction genres and setting the standard for excellence in fantasy writing. Any book published as a young adult science fiction/fantasy novel is eligible, including graphic novels with no limit on word length.
